In the wake of Donald Trump’s election to the US presidency, global multilateralism is in moment of convulsion and redefinition. Actors the world over are readjusting to a multipolar order in which institutions must reassess their goals, possibilities, and priorities. Both the European Union and Brazil, with their extensive histories of commitment to the multilateral form, are uniquely affected by the changes of the current moment. How will the future of multilateralism look on both sides of the Equator?

On November 6-7, scholars from the EU-sponsored ENSURED project – a global consortium focused on the robustness, effectiveness and democratic orientation of multilateralism – with scholars from Brazil and the Global South to find common solutions moving forward.

This ENSURED event in Rio de Janeiro is the first in a global event series to take place outside the EU and in the Global South. It focuses thematically on the topics of climate, trade, migration, health, and digitalisation, on which the ENSURED team has produced in-depth research reports and a number of policy briefs, blogs, and other inputs. Now entering the final phase of the project, the time has come to translate these efforts beyond the academy to contributing to concrete policy reforms and renewal in multilateral institutions.

The event is divided into panels that reflect ENSURED’s thematic foci: each will be evenly divided between ENSURED team members who will present the project’s extensive findings and recommendations, and Brazilian and Global South scholars who will bring their perspective to the debate. More than a dissemination event, the seminar’s goal of inclusions and consultation reflects the notion that effective, democratic, and robust multilateralism can only respond to current challenges if all the stakeholders are at the table.

Some panelists include:

  • Paulo Buss, former Director, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation;
  • Tu Xinquan, Dean, China Institute for WTO Studies, University of International Business and Economics Beijing
  • Clara Weinhardt, ENSURED Deputy Project Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Maastricht University
  • Hylke Dijkstra, ENSURED Project Coordinator and Professor, Maastricht University
