With Trump’s inauguration just around the corner, we are asking ourselves: How will a second Trump presidency impact global governance and multilateralism? Our ENSURED experts weighed in on this question.

During his first US presidential term, Donald Trump took a major swing at global governance. He pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement, withdrew from UNESCO, and abandoned the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in favor of an ‘America First’ trade policy — just to name a few.

With Trump’s inauguration just around the corner, we’re asking ourselves: How will a second Trump presidency impact global governance and multilateralism? ENSURED experts Hylke Dijkstra, Clara Weinhardt, Katja Biedenkopf, and Michal Parizek weighed in.

Here are some of the things they are looking out for in the coming weeks:

  • What’s the pace of Trump’s reforms? Will he come in hot on day one, threaten the EU with a full-out tariff war, or even go after the WTO? Or will he focus on domestic issues (first)?
  • How will the European Union respond? Are there things the EU can do to support and safeguard multilateralism on the global stage?
  • When it comes to climate policy, the US president is not the only force with political sway. US states, cities, companies — they all have a stake in global climate policy and could push the envelope when it comes to progressive climate reform.
